Cross Country Fences

Cross country fences can be found in many different forms, all designed to test the horse and rider in a different way. Cross country is the second discipline in eventing competitions and requires a tacit understanding between horse and rider as well as impeccable horsemanship from the rider.

Cross country comprises four sections, of phases, including two roads and tracks phases, a fast steeplechase with jumps and the cross country itself, which comprises most of the obstacles. This final section can be up to four miles long and include as many as 36 cross country fences.

At an advanced level, cross country fences can be up to 3’ 11” high. Those with no height, such as ditches, can be a massive 11’ 10” wide.

A corner fence, also known as an apex, is only tackled by high level riders and horses and consists of two logs raised off the ground and forming an angle. This angle can be up to 90 degrees. Attempts to jump a corner fence often result in run-outs.

Tiger trap jumps are not for the faint-hearted. A triangle of logs, they are a common cross country fence on more advanced circuits, but thanks to the experience needed from a rider to jump, they are not suitable for novices.

Cross Country Course

A trakehner is a frightening jump which consist of a rail over a ditch. They can be used at a training level but as the standard gets higher, the ditch gets bigger.

Log fences come in a variety of forms such as palisades. They offer a straight and solid jump, requiring boldness from both rider and horse to tackle. As with other cross country fences, palisades can vary in height and difficulty.

A triple bar is also a log fence, with three horizontal bars. Spreads, with poles of varying heights are also usually log fences.

A table fence is a flat surface made of logs which the horse runs along. This is an ideal jump to train a rider who has never jumped before, as horses rarely refuse a table fence.
