Show Jumps

There are several basic types of show jumps, although each type comes in a multitude of colours, shapes, sizes and even materials.

The most basic type of show jump is a vertical. These are the simple upwards jumps where poles are built on top of each other, but there is no width to the jump. Perfect for people who have not had much jumping experience they are usually the easiest type of jump to master.

An oxer, or a spread consists of two vertical show jumps next to each other, giving the horse a greater distance to jump across as well as up. These jumps present a greater challenge to both horse and rider. These jumps themselves vary, with a square oxer comprising level vertical jumps, an ascending oxer has the second pole higher and a descending oxer has the first pole higher.

Another variation on this is a triple, which, as the name suggests, has three bars across. The hog’s back is a tricky jump where the poles are uneven, with the highest one being the centre, and a wall is a solid jump made to look like a wall but the bricks are actually made of a lightweight material.

Large Show Jumping Set

All of these show jumps can be used in combinations, where the horse has to take a number of strides in between each one, or as water jumps, with water trays placed on one or both sides of the jump.

To be a successful show jumper, a rider needs to have boldness and courage and also grace and agility. Speed is also important, and the rider should always make sure the horse has been walked around the course prior to any competiton.
